Getting A Job

Getting a job is a must-challenge for a new graduates person. The faster he/she gets the job, it's the better, and the contrary, the longer he/she gets the job the worse it is.

For those who has an entrepreneurship talent, will not care whether he/she gets the job or not, he/she will do her/his own business. He/she can make money by him/herself.

@ some applicants are waiting for job interview

In job's world, sometime putting an add in a newspaper or other media creates another problem. Based on my experiences, on the companies I had ever worked with were :"Putting a job vacancy in a news paper invited thousands of application letters and it made headache".

My previous office one day put an add in a big newspaper in this country. Within a week the postman sent 8 big sacks to my office. It contained thousands applications letters.

Firstly, the HRD department staffs were very happy. They opened them one by one, but after the third sacks they were so tired. Finally they got the office boy open the sacks.

After all the enveloped were opened, the HRD staffs started to check the detail of the CVs. Due to so many papers and the couldn't finish it in a day, finally they got the office boy again to do after office hours.

It was right that the HRD gave them to criteria which could be selected which were must be thrown away. When the office boy did it, for the first hour, they still could do base on the requirements from the HRD, but after more than an hour they started to see whether the applicant was beautiful or not, handsome or not. For the woman which were beautiful based on the photos, they choose them and if they thought she wasn't beautiful they thrown away. And the same happened to the men. They finished the selection work after they did it for about 3 days.

Finally, out of 8 sacks, the company choose only 2 new staffs.

My other experience was in my other company. This company needed a new staff, it put an add in the community billboard. Finally there were 20 people applied.

These 20 people were interviewed, but none of them could meet the requirements of the company, so the vacant position was empty and the jobs of the vacant position were given to other staffs. No, vacancy add anymore issued by this company until I resigned from this company.

80/20 Theory

This theory is very famous and is still applicable right now. In free definition this theory explains "with 20% efforts we get 80% result, not, with 80% efforts we get 20% result". In job world  we can say freely "20%  of jobs are vacant and advertised in media, and there are  80% competitors, on the other side, 80% of jobs are vacant and not advertised in media and there are only 20% competitors".

So in getting a job, it would be much better if we can dig the 80% vacancies which are not advertised. We can consider the following :

1.Checking with our friends whether there is a vacant position or not in their office.

2. II the first is not possible, don't worry, just send your application letter to the office which becomes your target.

3. The most recommend action is :"you come directly to the office you want". Frankly, this method needs extra strong courage and brave of you.".

If you think that action number three is difficult and hard, may be you can consider the following true story :

Nur Arifah was a University graduates from Solo. She had to follow her husband to Jakarta after her marriage. In Jakarta she didn't have any relatives, friends, or families with high position. Her husband also had lost contact with most of his friends in Jakarta because he was in Solo for 6 years.

After failing to apply for jobs for some times, finally she decided to come directly to the office that she wanted to apply. She came to a big Islam based school in Kelapa Gading. She met the security person. She told the security person that she wanted to apply for job in this school. The security person told her to meet the Human Resources Manager. When she met the manager, she said that she wanted to apply for job, and the manager told her that there was a vacant position replacing a teacher who delivered to a baby. Nur accepted that offer, in the next day she had already worked for that school. Lucky for her, because the person who delivered the baby finally resigned from the school, and Nur became a contract teacher for a year in the school.

After working for a year in that school, she wanted to apply job in a big and famous school in Pemuda Road. The same method she did to apply for teacher position in that school. She really didn't know whether there was vacant position or not, but the most important thing for her was she came there and then she would know whether there was a vacant position or not.

When she came there, she met the security person. She said that she would apply for the teacher position in this school. The security person told her to met the principal, and the she went to the principal's room. The principal said that there was vacant position for replacing a pregnant teacher who was going to deliver her baby. So the time was for only 3 months to work there.

After thinking for a while and considering that she would be permanent teacher in her current school, she decided not to take that position. No choice she must forget her dream to teach in the school in Pemuda Road. However she was lucky, in fact the CV and the application letter which she sent to the school in Pemuda Road was not thrown away. It was kept by the school, and when there was a test for recruiting new teachers she was invited to join the test. After joining some series of test, finally she was accepted by the school.

Nur, used 80/20 theory although she didn't realized that she applied  that theory. She didn't wait the add or information of vacant position, but she chased the vacancy. Finally she got what she wanted :"Teach in that favorite school".
